Real Girls Do Art

As we continue to explore our place in the world there are several upcoming Council activities that will allow the girls to express themselves through various mediums. 

BROWNIES

Saturday  December 7, 2013 (10:00AM -5:00PM) @ The Crayola Factory in Easton, PA

The Crayola Factory in Easton, PA is an opportunity for the Brownies to gather with sister Girl Scouts from around the Council and enjoy the Crayola Experience! Girls will explore18 fun attractions that combine color, chemistry and technology, and discover how crayons are made in an animated show. Through hands-on projects, the brownies will create their very own marker, build with Model Magic, draw and paint! In a GSEP-exclusive program, scouts will learn about famous women artists who were leaders in their field, and their unique style of creating masterpieces. 

Workshop times vary and will be assigned 2 weeks before the program.  Each workshop last approximately 45 minutes and we will be able to explore the Factory on our own.  Depending on the workshop time, the total time for the trip, including travel time is approximately 5.5 hours. I can transport 6 girls and 1 adult and would need two additional adults to assist with transportation and supervision.

CADETTES/JUNIORS

Saturday, December 7, 2013 - 9:00AM - 12:00 PM @ the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts

Discover how leaders with a creative vision can use art to change the world— and how art can help girls advocate for social change!  Gather with sister Girl Scouts at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) for a leadership conference about inspiration, artistic expression, and making a social impact through art. Learn how art has helped empower women throughout history, and how Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program has revitalized poor neighborhoods. Prepare to get your hands dirty through art projects. Hear inspiring stories from community leaders and artists, and express your dreams about issues that matter to you. Imagine new ways to use art as a powerful tool to create positive change for girls and women at home and abroad.  Workshops will relate to the “It’s Your World-Change It” Journey. An adult workshop track and lounge will be available for registrants to support creativity in girls and to help develop the next generation of women leaders. Housed in an elegant Historic Landmark building, PAFA was one of the first institutions to educate and exhibit female artists. 

This program occurs concurrently to the Brownie program at the Crayola Factory in Easton and I would need at least two adult chaperones to assist with transportation and supervision of the girls in my absence.

**In order for the girls to participate in these programs, I will need to make reservations immediately, so your RSVP by Friday, November 15th or Saturday, November 16th is REQUIRED.**

 

Tie Dye Washing Instructions

It takes 24 to 48 hours for the dye to fully set into the shirt. Leave the shirt in the bag that it was brought home in until you are ready to wash the shirt. Be sure to leave it in a sink, or a pan where it will not leak. The longer the shirt sits before washing the more intense and defined the colors will be.

Before handling the shirt, PLEASE WEAR GLOVES OR BAGS ON YOUR HANDS! The dye that we used is non-toxic, but it will stain your skin and clothing. If you do not wear gloves, you will end up with “purple” fingers for a few days, as well as ruined clothing, so please cover up!

While the shirt is still tied, it needs to be rinsed under cold running water, the sink that is closest to the washing machine is usually the best to use, less water dripping all over after rinsing. This should take you about five minutes. When you see very little dye running off of the tied up shirt, start to gradually remove the rubber bands while still rinsing. Get as much dye out as possible this way. Immediately after rinsing, wring out the excess water from the shirt, then wash the shirt by itself with cold water and soap in the washing machine. Remember, good rinsing keeps the design from looking “muddy” and colors from running into each other.

After the washer has finished, put your shirt into the dryer. The dye sets to a permanent color with the heat of the dryer. If you let the shirt sit in the washing machine for a long time, or do not dry the shirt, the colors will run together into a blurry design.

Visit to the Birthplace of our Founder, Juliette Gordon Low

I have planned/organized a trip to Savannah, GA  

July 17th-21, 2014

The Tour Includes: Roundtrip Transportation via Amtrak to and from Philadelphia; four nights hotel accommodations (breakfast is included with hotel stay); a day at the Birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of Girl Scouts); a pool and pizza party; a day on Tybee Island, including a dolphin tour and visit to the Tybee Lighthouse; tour of the historic Pirate House, includes lunch; Savannah Fun Tours Scavenger Hunt; Old Savannah Tours Historic Trolley Tour; tour of the First African Baptist Church (a stop on the underground railroad and the oldest dinner at local favorites; Personalized Girl Scout travel booklet to enhance learning; and all taxes are included. Personal tour of the city, to include famous monuments, museums and attractions!

The girls will earn several badges including the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace patch and pin, coastal Georgia badge, dolphin tour fun patch, and many others. A tentative itinerary is included. Currently, I have reserved 25 seats on Amtrak and the cost breakdown is as follows:

$426.00 per scout (not including any offset from the cookie sale)

$523.00 per adult

$493.00 per senior (persons 62+)

The cost breakdown is based on five persons in a room, train ticket prices, visit to the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, patches, t-shirts, pins, and estimated cost of meals.

The goal is to offset the cost of the trip for each scout up to $100.00, based on cookie sales.

**Additional seats can be reserved based on interest and deposits received.
